CO2

Systems with CO2 may be controlled manually or automatically. The automatic system is always designed with time delay and other safety functions, which facilitate evacuation of persons present in the protected space. Suitable type of automatic detection must be selected with respect to correct function of the system. CO2 systems must be checked regularly to ensure proper functioning of the system in case of fire. Machines, printing presses and smaller device may be protected by so-called local systems.

Strategy of protection against fire using the carbon dioxide depends on the nature of hazard and type of the environment. Most widely these systems are used as a part of flooding systems where the carbon dioxide is discharged to an enclosed space until the oxygen concentration drops below the level where burning is possible.

Since the carbon dioxide is heavier than air, its high efficiency is achieved by the fact that it creates an extinguishing cloud at low height that spreads over very wide area and can reach even hidden spaces. It is also efficient for extinguishing deep seated and smouldering fires. 

Depending on the volume of space to be protected by this system, the carbon dioxide may be stored in liquid form in pressurized cylinders or deep-frozen in tanks.

Carbon dioxide can be discharged over longer time – especially when there is a risk of re-ignition or permanent deep-seated burning.

Local systems where the nozzles are directed directly to the device under risk are used mainly for protection of machines and printing presses. Smaller flooding systems, combined with fast detection system, are used at places with explosion hazard.

The system may be controlled manually or automatically. Type of detection must be selected to ensure optimal function of the system without unnecessary risks for personnel.
